abnormal lab test

Another important factor is that some tests, notably those in the endocrine field, have a very wide range of “normal,” reflecting the fact that they were derived from a large sample of presumably healthy people. In many cases, an individual has a much narrower range of normal, which may be at the top, middle or bottom of the population normal. You MUST take into account the entire picture: history, physical exam and laboratory tests.

Subject: Re: [IMPROVEDX] abnormal lab test

It is critical for patients to understand that some labs may be "normal" though high or low, and that the trend of that measure may be more important than the actual number. In addition, the various measures that rise or fall together, or rise and fall in opposition to one another can guide the diagnosis. Neither the patient nor the doctor should focus solely on one measure without seeing the interactions and the trends.

Unfortunately patients are not all numbers, we're unique human beings. What a true "mean" is for one patient may not be that in another.

Any singular abnormal laboratory should be repeated once to ascertain regression to the mean.
