I wanted to alert our listserv participants to the national forum on sepsis recognition being organized by the Rory Staunton Foundation this September in Washington, DC. Those of you who attended our DEM conference a few years ago will remember the poignant presentation by Rory's father, Ciaran, about the tragic loss of his son to the delayed diagnosis of Strep sepsis. Rory's case has been especially meaningful to our diagnostic error community because it reflects the complex interplay of system-related and cognitive factors that so often underlie diagnostic errors, but more importantly the opportunity to take actions that can reduce the risk of similar problems recurring in the future. Both the institution involved and New York state have taken specific steps to expedite the recognition of sepsis and ER-related errors, and there is much to be learned and shared from these efforts.

"We now know much more about sepsis. In New York, because of Rory's Regulations, clinicians must first "think sepsis" and act accordingly. Our mission is to make that mandate and mindset the national standard of care. Vast numbers of patients walking into emergency rooms across this country and the world show symptoms of sepsis. Too many, like our precious son Rory, are sent home only to return gravely ill, and with no hope. It is when government and the medical community come together, that we can eradicate this vicious killer," the Staunton's concluded.
