I remember a case in Chicago 20+ years ago involving an emergency physician friend and colleague of mine whose child was taken into protective custody by hospital authorities because she refused a CT brain scan for her son who had a mild sports-related head injury. They would not allow her to reject the CT scan and elect a watchful waiting strategy.
