Clinical laboratory issues in diagnostic testing - recent Milwaukee Sentinel investigation

In a word, No – there are problems in medicine as well as in Laboratory medicine. In Lab medicine, we separate the testing process into pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical. By far the largest source of error is NOT the analytical phase, it is the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases. These phases include selection and interpretation of tests, which is the physicians area. We in clinical pathology are struggling to address those very areas because they are sources of a lot of error and often patient harm. Clinical pathologists and experienced Medical Technologists know more about the strengths and weaknesses of tests and where they should or should not be applied than physicians – we need to find a way to work together to address these issues.

And as a purely personal whine --- WHY IS IT ALWAYS THE LABS FAULT???

Does this make focussing on errors in medicine superfluous? Should we not try to sort out the basics first?
