Further information about the Coalition to Improve Diagnosis

Tue Sep 1 22:17:13 UTC 2015

I have read your comments about the announced Coalition with interest and
have chosen to wait a few days to collect all the questions so I can provide
one "complete" response.

The initial 13 organizations included in the press release represent the
steering committee (SC) of the Coalition, i.e., its governance. SIDM, as
the convener of the Coalition also appoints the Chair for the first two
years, a position that I am filling. At the moment, the SC is also the
entirety of the Coalition itself. However, it has been and remains the
intent of the SC that we grow the Coalition. We will welcome organizations
from all facets of healthcare although we are still working on the
categories to differentiate between those organizations that don't have a
conflict of interest under SIDM policies, e.g., care delivery organizations,
most membership organizations, societies, accreditation organizations, etc.;
and those that might have a conflict of interest, e.g. companies with
diagnostic products to sell. We will also have a category for governmental
organizations where signing documents and making commitments on behalf of
the Agency are challenging at best.

Ultimately membership will require three written commitments: approval to be
publicly named as a member; endorsement of the Coalition's shared
principles, a document I will soon post to the Coalition website
(www.DxCoalition.org <http://www.DxCoalition.org> ); and a commitment to
take meaningful, publicly declared action within their organization to
improve diagnostic performance. The definition of meaningful action will
probably evolve over time. The intent is not to collect endorsements, but
rather to get things done that make a difference. Steering Committee
members have also committed to take collective action as a group in addition
to their individual actions.

For those of you who represent an organization that might be interested in
being a Coalition member, I hope to have details about the process shortly.
If you have specific questions, feel free to contact me directly.
