On target!!!
After several thousands of years doing anything (such as diagnosing), it (whatever it is) is ripe for... research! However, we must not rush. First thousands of pages must be written about what a good idea it would be to do it right.
Kudos and thanks to IOM for contributing another 369 of those required pages.!!!

Thanks to Bimal for pointing out the need to study and improve diagnosis in actual practice. I couldn't agree more, and hope that many people will begin to think of diagnosis as a PROCESS that has many steps, and focus on improving (and expediting) that process. Seems ripe for both research and rapid-cycle improvement projects.

MarkCongratulations on publication of IOM report on improving diagnosis. This is a landmark in our Society’s efforts to improve diagnosis. But, as you mention,
this report is just a start. To prevent diagnostic errors, we need a better understanding, I suggest, of how diagnosis is performed in actual practice. Bimal Bimal P Jain MDPulmonary-CriticalCareNorthshore Medical CenterLynn MA 01904

FOR RELEASE AT 11 AM, TUESDAY, SEPT 22

************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Dear SIDM Members and Friends,

The Institute of Medicine's report "Improving Diagnosis in Health Care" is now officially published and can be found at the link below. Attached to this message are 3 other summary documents from the IOM: a toolkit, a summary of the recommendations,
and a brief summary of the report. Please feel free to share these resources with friends, colleagues, and local leaders.

This is a banner day for everyone interested in improving diagnosis and reducing diagnostic error, and for our Society as well. Its my own belief that we excel at diagnosis in the US, but that we can improve from where we are, and we must.
The report opens the door to discussions with everyone involved with diagnosis about how to improve. The IOM recommendations are just a start; the challenge is to translate these into meaningful change in our medical schools, hospitals, and practices. To
get these discussion started, the IOM report will be the main topic for discussion at our Diagnostic Error in Medicine meeting this next week in DC - I hope to see you there.

I'd like to thank everyone who's been so supportive of our efforts to get to this point, and its seems almost certain that the best is yet to come. Our new "Coalition to Improve Diagnosis" will be one major lever to get things moving,
and the other will be the individual actions you all take in your practices, educational programs, research projects, and advocacy work. We look forward to sharing news about our progress, and to hearing about yours.

  Mark
