The IOM report on Improving Diagnosis in Healthcare <http://nas.edu/improvingdiagnosis> recommended the use of open communication and resolution programs in the event a patient is harmed by a diagnostic error. Dr Thomas Gallagher was a member of the IOM panel and heads up the Collaborative for Accountability and Improvement (www.communicationandresolution.org <http://www.communicationandresolution.org/>), which will be hosting a Leader Retreat on this approach in collaboration with The National Patient Safety Foundation at Stanford University 2/18-2/19. The list of speakers is very impressive, and includes Richard Boothman JD, Jeffrey Driver JD MBA, Timothy McDonald MD JD, Kenneth Sands MD MPH, and Dr Gallagher. I am personally a strong proponent of alternative resolution programs, and would look forward to the day when this becomes the norm. For anyone who might be interested, the Stanford program looks like it would be an excellent place to learn from the people who helped found this movement.
