[IMPROVEDX] Burn out

If hospitals are not spurred to action by the experience in their own community of their own clinicians drowning, struggling to stay whole and (like me) first being vocally frustrated, then disengaged and ultimately retiring early, they are not likely to be motivated by some position statement, articles in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, or discussion on ListServs like this. You might get some lip service, but do not expect constructive activity.

Attach money to it, and watch them dance.

Peter Elias, MD

(yes, this is a pretty raw nerve for me…)

There is the odd chance that a hospital will improve communications because of the IOM report. But would have to have a progressive CEO. Could be wrong!

I am expecting/hoping that the report will start being discussed by hospital boards and this will eventually translate in some sort of action which could include providing and encouraging the use of decision support as you describe.
