By Harvey V. Fineberg, Ph.D.
Each day our elected officials make policy decisions that affect our lives on a wide-range of topics such as public health, air quality, water, energy, transportation and innovation. Knowledge of science and engineering could inform discussion and advance debate. Harvey Fineberg, president of the Moore Foundation, applauds the Science Fellows selected by the California Council on Science and Technology who staff legislative offices and committees in the California State Assembly.

New tunnels in Santa Cruz Mountains will provide safe corridor for wildlife
By the end of this decade, mountain lions, deer and other wildlife living in the Santa Cruz Mountains will have their own protected passage across the notoriously dangerous Highway 17 when Northern California’s first major “wildlife corridors” are constructed. Funding from the foundation’s regional conservation work will support construction of the Laurel Curve tunnel.

Safe passage program aims to improve air quality and protect blue whales
Nearly 200 blue whales visit the Santa Barbara Channel each summer on their annual migration up the West Coast. Meanwhile, thousands of container ships transit the channels internationally designated shipping lanes each year, elevating the risk of ship strikes on these endangered animals. Funding from the foundation’s Marine Conservation Initiative has helped support the Safe Passage Project’s collaborative efforts to balance the needs of humans, whales and ships in the Santa Barbara Channel region.

Seinfeld's Elaine reminds us why we should have our medical records
In 1996, a Seinfeld episode chronicled Elaine trying to view her record. Her doctor labelled her a “difficult patient” and her requests to see her record confirmed the diagnosis. At that time, HIPAA was not law and people did not have a legal right to view their records. Today, 20 years later, they do and increasingly they have access to electronic medical records. The creators of OpenNotes <http://moore.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7b645da1af2cebb8b03845b51&id=4114e481e6&e=05f34e169a> developed this new video <http://moore.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7b645da1af2cebb8b03845b51&id=a701cf3e09&e=05f34e169a> featuring the infamous Seinfeld episode and e-patient Dave <http://moore.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7b645da1af2cebb8b03845b51&id=31df90e4fe&e=05f34e169a> explaining why access to medical records matters.

Bird fossil discovery suggests dinosaurs didn't sing
Moore Foundation grantees at the University of Texas, Austin and the University of Utah recently discovered the oldest known vocal organ of a bird in an Antarctic fossil of a relative of ducks and geese that lived more than 66 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs. The discovery indicates that bird-like dinosaurs may not have been able to make noises similar to the birdcalls we hear today.
