Burnout

Hi Rob,

You may find the following citations a helpful starting point. Burnout is
commonly studied in occupational health psychology and consists of three
constructs: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and feelings of
inefficiency. The presence of these constructs in an individual may result
in substance use like Xavier mentioned. My understanding is that burnout is
prevalent in healthcare due to the constraints of the job (e.g., lots of
patients, but so little time).

   1. Maslach, C., Schaufeli, W. B., & Leiter, M. P. (2001). Job
burnout. *Annual
   review of psychology*, *52*(1), 397-422
   2. Shanafelt, Tait D., et al. "Burnout and medical errors among American
   surgeons." *Annals of surgery* 251.6 (2010): 995-1000.

I'm always happy to discuss further.

Best,
