Inpatient diagnostic errors

Sure !

In the study by Tsugawa et al, the patients seen by the oldest docs had a higher baseline incidence of CHF, COPD, neurological disorders (all p <.0001) and cancer (p = -.03). They also had more diabetes, renal failure, and mental illness, even though these did not reach statistical significance. See Table 1 attached. I would contest the authors conclusion that their patients were ‘similar’ to those treated by younger physicians, and the risk adjustment that was applied to make that conclusion. The data suggest the older docs were treating a sicker cohort, and its not surprising that they had a higher mortality rate (barely).
