The status of heuristics and cognitive biases as a source of diagnostic errors.

from a patient's perspective, the reminder that the physician must a
learner at all times is essential. Though we do expect some expertise from
the doctor, we also recognize that there is uncertainty in most important
things in life. We do want the best thinking from our doctors, and with
that, the willingness to continue to question his diagnosis, the
recommended treatment, the patient's reporting of symptoms or lack thereof
and so on. There is no shame is saying out loud, "Let me know if you think
this diagnosis makes sense, or if you think I am missing some aspect of
your situation that is not addressed by the diagnosis."

Love to hear from pediatricians in this context, as they certainly must
always rely on that favorite third party--the mother--in reporting
symptoms, responses and reactions to the diagnosis. Rarely do they dismiss
the concern of the parent to the degree that the adult patient's concerns
are disregarded--or was I just lucky to have good pediatricians in my day?
