Einstein's influence on our study of the method of diagnosis

Dear Bimal,
Good thinking.
In terms of making scientific breakthroughs I have often wondered if looking at outlier events/reports more closely, while ignoring accepted knowledge and practices, is a way to make more significant advances.
Was there any evidence that Einstein took small facts and events that had been generally ignored to make his advances?
I am reminded of zones of inhibition written up by Alexaander Fleming that lay unrecognized for about ten years until Ernst Boris Chain and Florey had their brilliant idea of looking for the substance that caused those zones.
