Diagnostic Safety Research Funds announcement

Funds for diagnostic error research remain extremely limited. Outside of AHRQ, the NPSF has sponsored patient safety research, and it would be worthwhile looking at local organizations as well. In MA, CRICO has sponsored safety research projects, and there are probably legacy healthcare foundations that should be explored.

Thank you Ruth for sending this along. I do have a question. Is there funding available for smaller scale research projects in the pediatric ambulatory setting? We are a smaller practice seeing only 6000 patients per year but belong to a larger ACO who manage >600K patients per year. Our practice is committed to developing strategies ( team care, root cause analysis protocol, and clinical quality and safety officer) to improve the safety of care and diagnostic accuracy reviews. We are interested in doing a study in this area and looking for funding for smaller groups like ourselves. Can you direct me to the appropriate sources? Thank you in advance, Julianne

Grant Funding Available for Patient Safety Research
AHRQ is seeking funding applications for research projects that investigate safe medication use, medical simulation, diagnostic safety, healthcare-associated infections (including antibiotic resistance) and patient safety learning labs, where transdisciplinary teams use systems engineering methodology to develop and test innovative ideas for addressing patient safety threats. While AHRQ funds patient safety research in all settings of care, the agency is particularly interested in projects that examine the epidemiology of patient safety in ambulatory care settings and long-term care facilities, strategies that can improve safety in these settings and evidence-based tools to facilitate the implementation of these strategies.
