I’m struck by how far we’ve come from the adage I was taught by more than one respected mentor in the 1970s:

“Give the patient what she needs, and convince her it is what she wants.”

Still plenty of room for learning about the ways clinicians and patients can collaborate for best outcomes, but it is also worth reflecting on how much change there has been in one physician’s clinical lifetime.
