White paper on inappropriate laboratory testing - wow, fantastic! Thanks!!

Thanks for this Mark – what an amazing report! We all knew this is happening—every day, everywhere—but these Howe people in Canada have really done a great job at quantifying the problem for their system. They really have terrific data.

Of course, the problem with inappropriate utilization of medical imaging is also bad, although quantitatively I’m guessing it is dwarfed by the tsunami of inappropriately ordered lab tests. There have been attempts to estimate the scope of inappropriate imaging, and a few papers have been published on that topic, with some speculating that it may account for as much as half of all medical imaging done in the US, but to my knowledge nothing quite as comprehensive and/or authoritative as this Howe report has appeared in the imaging literature.

All the best,

FYI…..

Attached is an authoritative report just issued from the Howe Institute on inappropriate lab testing in Canada.

The report estimates the magnitude of inappropriate over- and under-utilization, and provides advice on how to improve more appropriate test ordering going forward.
