Example of how DDx Generators can help

I am glad you agree. For me this case demonstrates some very pertinent points.

  1. To me it shows that, far from being a threat to clinicians, AI (a DDx Generator in this case) made the clinicians much more relevant. It shows how the expensive and extensive work up just revealed all the things she didn’t have and it took the clinicians thinking (after using the DDx Generator) to reach the correct answer. My personal view is that the ever increasing use of testing and imaging is far more likely to be a threat to clinicians than AI tools to aid thinking. Taken to its logical conclusion, the reliance on lab work and imaging would reduce clinicians to the role of test orderers!

  1. The negative side is that the clinicians waited too long before they used the DDx. They were getting close to losing the patient before they did. If clinicians had a lower threshold to double check their thinking and use these tools much earlier on and more routinely then hopefully cases like this would not get such a perilous state and the overall costs of care would be considerably less.

My 2nd point is probably a result of the issue raised in the 1st point. I believe it needs clinicians to put more value on their own thinking skills and embrace the contribution to those skills that can be made by AI tools like DDx Generators.

Jason

This is a fantastic case presented by the folks at Loyola Medicine MacNeal Hospital at ACP 2019 which shows how DDx Generators can help.
