Jason. Human foibles trump logic...i
e....you may expect a tighter coupling than warranted. While they acknowledge uncertainty...perhaps they want to believe they hit the right Dx anyway.

This survey has now got 463 respondents so the results are looking more credible. Do you think there is a close correlation between these 2 questions?

  * How often do you experience diagnostic uncertainty while practicing medicine?

Every day 47%
About once a week 19%
Several times a month 16%

  * How often do you think you make diagnostic errors?

Every day 15%
About once a week 21%
Several times a month 17%

For me there is a disconnect between clinicians often saying they don’t have time or need to use decision support tools and the frequency of them facing dx uncertainly and subsequent errors as shown by this survey. The numbers imply that 2/3 of the time when there is dx uncertainty it turns into an error.

Jason

This is a fascinating article and survey on Medscape. So far 85% of clinicians say they experience diagnostic uncertainty several times a month or more. Please respond to the survey and pass around to your colleagues so we can get see the results with a significant response rate.
